Job Interview Tips

Many jobs for working holiday makers start with a quick phone call or a trial shift rather than a formal interview. Either way, a little preparation goes a long way.

Before the interview

  • Read the job ad again and look up the business.
  • Know your dates: when you can start, how long you can stay and your visa type.
  • Have your tickets (RSA, White Card and so on) and ID ready to show.
  • Plan how you will get there and arrive 10 minutes early.

Common questions

  • Tell me about yourself.
  • What work have you done before?
  • How long are you staying in the area?
  • Do you have your own transport?
  • Are you OK with early starts, heat or physical work?

Trial shifts

A short unpaid trial is only allowed if it is genuinely to show your skills and lasts no longer than needed for that, usually an hour or two. If you are doing productive work, you should be paid.

Phone and video interviews

  • Find a quiet spot with good reception.
  • Answer with your name, and smile. It comes through in your voice.
  • Have a question ready, such as “What does a normal day look like?”
