Home Affairs says it is normalising processing times for most Working Holiday Maker visa applications, and expects the average to be around three months. It warns applicants not to book flights or make work or study commitments until the visa is granted.
What this means for you
- Apply early, especially if you are close to the age limit. The age rule applies on the day you lodge.
- Do not book non-refundable flights before your grant.
- Have your passport, funds (about AUD 5,000) and any health checks ready so your application is not delayed.
Reports in September 2026 said UK applications may continue to be processed at a slower pace for now.

Why processing times have changed
Over the past few years, many working holiday visas were granted within days. Home Affairs now says it is bringing processing back to normal, which means most applications will take longer than people are used to. Some may still be quick, but you should plan for around three months.
When to apply
Work backwards from the date you want to fly. If you want to arrive in Australia at the start of summer, lodge your application at least three to four months before. If your birthday is close to the age limit, apply as early as possible, because your age is checked on the day you lodge.
How to avoid delays
- Fill in every question honestly and completely.
- Make sure your passport details match exactly.
- Upload clear documents if asked, such as evidence of funds.
- Do health checks or police certificates as soon as you are asked.
- Check your email, including spam, for messages from Home Affairs.
What not to do while you wait
Do not book non-refundable flights, sign a lease, accept a job start date or pay for courses until your visa is granted. If you must book something, choose flexible or refundable options. Travel insurance usually will not cover costs if your visa is not granted in time.
What you can do while you wait
Use the time to get ready. Save money, sort out travel insurance, research where you want to live and work first, and get your CV ready for Australian employers. Australian CVs are usually short, clear and focused on practical skills and availability. Our free AI CV builder can write one for you in a couple of minutes.
After your grant
Once your visa is granted, check the grant letter carefully. It shows the date you must enter Australia by, usually within 12 months of the grant. Your 12 months of stay begin on the day you first arrive.

Arriving soon?
When you land you will need a TFN, a bank account, an Australian phone number and somewhere to stay. Then start applying for jobs on TAW. Many employers hire working holiday makers all year round, especially in hospitality, farm work and construction.
