Answers to the questions we get asked most about farm work.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum pay for farm work?

From 1 July 2026 the Horticulture Award casual Level 1 rate is $32.18 an hour, including the 25% casual loading. Piece rate workers must earn at least this for the hours they work.

Can a farm charge me for accommodation?

Yes, but only with your written agreement, and the amount must be reasonable. Deductions must be for your benefit and shown on your payslip.

Do I need a car for farm work?

Not always. Many working hostels run transport to farms, often for a daily fee. A car gives you far more choice of jobs.

How do I know a farm job is genuine?

Check the business ABN on the ABN Lookup website, get the pay rate and award in writing, read reviews, and never pay a fee to get the job.

What if I am underpaid?

Keep your records and contact the Fair Work Ombudsman, which is free. Your visa status does not stop you getting help.

Can I do my 88 days with more than one employer?

Yes. You can add up specified work from different employers, as long as each job is eligible and you have payslips for all of it.
