Most employers are great, but it pays to check a few things before you travel to a new job, especially remote farm work.
Before you accept
- Get the business name and ABN, and look it up on the ABN Lookup.
- Ask for the pay rate, the award, expected hours and how you will be paid in writing.
- Never pay money to get a job. Be wary of anyone asking for a “bond” or fee upfront.
- If accommodation is included, ask the cost, how it is paid and see photos.
- Search online for reviews from other backpackers.
When you arrive
- You should get a safety induction and any protective gear you need.
- Keep your own record of the hours you work and what you are paid.
- Expect payslips within one working day of being paid.
- Keep your passport yourself. An employer should not hold it.
Staying safe in the outback
- Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to arrive.
- Carry plenty of water, and do not drive at dusk or night in country areas because of wildlife.
- Know where the nearest town and medical help are.
In an emergency call 000.
