RSA Certificate: Responsible Service of Alcohol

Quick answer

An RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) certificate is required to serve or sell alcohol in Australia. Each state has its own RSA, so you usually need the one for the state you work in. Courses take about a day and many can be done online.

Last checked: 25 October 2026

State by state

  • NSW: issued by Liquor and Gaming NSW after an approved course. You get a digital competency card in the Service NSW app.
  • Victoria: approved RSA course, with a refresher every three years.
  • Queensland: RSA from an approved training provider. Some venues also want an RSG (responsible service of gambling).
  • Other states: SA, WA, TAS, NT and ACT each have their own approved courses.

Venues with pokies (gaming machines) may also ask for an RCG or RSG certificate.

Tips

  • Get the RSA for the state where you plan to work first.
  • Only use providers approved by that state’s liquor regulator.

Frequently asked questions

Is an RSA valid in every state?

No. Each state has its own RSA rules. Some accept interstate certificates in limited cases, but most venues want the RSA for their state.
